Spam - Avoiding, Blocking, and Reporting

Everyone with an E-Mail address is a potential victim for unwanted E-Mail (spam), and very few users know how to handle it. This page was made to help deal with all aspects of spam problems.

Avoiding:
Some people may argue this point, but we believe you should never reply to spam/junk mail that you receive even if it says "click reply and put "unsubscribe" in the subject to be removed from our list". If you reply to these mail messages you are verifying that someone checks that email account. You may put "unsubscribe" in the subject, send it back to the person who sent you the mail, and they may take your name off their list, but in turn they will sell your name to another marketing company since you have verified that you do check that mail account. So we can't stress enough how important it is to NEVER EVER EVER reply to spam/junk mail. Also if you give your address to friends and family without asking them to never use the address other than to send you mail directly, you will find that these people will give your address to web-sites etc.. Also you will notice that some people send you mail as a CC (carbon copy) and they send the same message to everyone in their address book. Your friends/family will think they are sharing content with you, but they are just sharing your e-mail address, and they could just tell you how they got to the item they are trying to show you, rather than give out your address. In the case of CC E-Mails, if the sender uses the BCC (blind carbon copy) field instead of CC, it will not share all the addresses. It may seem rude, but if you want to avoid spam, you should give all people with your E-Mail address some sort of speech on appropriate use of that info. Some people even register with free mail services such as Hotmail and then use that address for public exposure since it's really easy to just make a new account and drop the old one if spam becomes a problem.

Blocking:
Depending on the Mail program you use, you may be able to block incoming E-Mail from unwanted senders.

In Outlook Express:

- Click on the message that you want to block

- Click on the Message menu

- Click on Block Sender

In Eudora 5.x:

- Click on the message that you want to block

- Click on the Special Menu

- Click on Make Filter

- In the bottom of the filter window, place a dot in "Delete Message" and then click OK

There are other programs out there that do block mail, please refer to the help menu in the program you are using before calling technical support. We try to help with any software you wish to use, but if you are not using a program we have experience with, our technicians will have to refer you back to the documentation for the program you are using.
